Rescue Effort Saves Horses Stranded in Severe Winter Conditions

Emergency rescue saves 20 wild horses trapped by snow in Inyo National Forest

Severe Weather Traps Wild Horses, Prompting Urgent Rescue Efforts

Amid harsh winter conditions, a group of wild horses found themselves trapped without food or water, leading to a dire situation for the herd. Stranded beyond their traditional roaming grounds, many of these horses were found in emaciated and poor health, necessitating urgent intervention by Forest Service teams.

Last weekend, Forest Service crews successfully rescued 24 horses caught in snowbound areas. Unfortunately, one horse succumbed to extreme emaciation, while three others had to be humanely euthanized due to their critically poor condition. Additionally, six horses were discovered dead from starvation and prolonged exposure to harsh elements.

The surviving 20 horses were given emergency care to stabilize their conditions before being transferred to a temporary holding facility in Bishop. They have since been moved to a more advanced rehabilitation center in Modoc National Forest, where their recovery is anticipated to take as long as 10 months.

These horses are part of the Montgomery Pass herd, known to have ventured far from their typical habitat even before the winter storm hit. A February 2024 census revealed that 624 out of 699 horses from the herd were outside their assigned territory. Officials cited the growing population as a reason for the herd’s expansion into neighboring regions in search of food and water, likely leaving them trapped off-range when the unexpected winter storm came after a period of warm, dry weather.

The Forest Service has assured that the rescued horses are receiving care aligned with federal law and humane welfare standards, with their recovery process being closely monitored to ensure they regain strength and stability.

In the wake of the rescue operations, the Bald Mountain area was temporarily closed by the Forest Service to facilitate the efforts, though it has since been reopened.
