Reno’s Tourism Boom: A Business Traveler’s Haven Amid National Decline
While many cities across the United States are witnessing a downturn in tourism, Reno is experiencing a surprising surge of visitors. Business travel is a significant driving force behind this trend, according to Visit Reno Tahoe’s CEO, Mike Larragueta.
Larragueta explains that Reno’s appeal lies in its diverse lodging options, particularly the limited or select-service properties that attract corporate interest. The city has strategically invested in these facilities, enhancing its attractiveness for businesses looking to relocate to Northern Nevada.
“I think that is a result of just development within the community and you know an exceptional job of bringing more business to relocate to Northern Nevada,” Larragueta noted.
Reno’s status as a preferred destination for conventions is growing, although precise spending patterns of visitors remain unclear. However, gaming revenue in Reno is notably robust, offering a favorable comparison to Las Vegas.
Larragueta highlighted Reno-Tahoe’s strengths, stating, “When you compare Reno-Tahoe versus Las Vegas and versus some of the national trends, Northern Nevada is really holding its own across the board. It’s obviously [the] affordability and value, and outdoor recreation, which is generally either free or significantly discounted. So it’s appealing.”
Looking ahead, Larragueta is optimistic about maintaining this upward trajectory through 2026. With numerous large events scheduled this year, he anticipates further increases in visitor numbers, contributing to Reno’s revenue and fostering additional city investments.
