New 24/7 Navigation Center Opens to Address Homelessness in Truckee

New shelter part of broader homelessness strategy in Truckee–North Tahoe

A New Approach to Homelessness in Tahoe–Truckee: Year-Round Navigation Center Opens

As severe winter storms once dictated the availability of emergency shelter in the North Tahoe–Truckee area, a significant change is now underway with the opening of a new navigation center in Truckee. This facility, featuring 16 beds, is set to provide 24/7 accommodation throughout the year.

Organized by the Tahoe Truckee Homeless Action Coalition, the initiative is financially supported by various local agencies and community foundations. The center forms an integral part of a broader five-year regional plan, aimed at tackling homelessness through coordinated efforts.

According to Jazmin Breaux, a program manager with Nevada County Health and Human Services, the opening of this facility marks a transformation in the region’s strategy towards addressing homelessness. “I think that’s the story,” Breaux commented. “This is a community that is taking steps towards ending homelessness in our region, and we recognize that that takes many different approaches.”

Current data highlights that the majority of unsheltered individuals in the Tahoe–Truckee area are single adults. In contrast, families facing homelessness often have established connections with existing programs, such as those offered by Sierra Community House, which provide domestic violence and housing assistance.

The newly established Navigation Center is specifically designed to assist single adults living unsheltered in Truckee and North Lake Tahoe, with a focus on individuals with strong local ties.

Deemed a structured, one-year pilot project, the center is intentionally kept small. It is not intended to expand into a large emergency shelter. Rather, it aims to function as a precise, community-focused intervention that complements pre-existing services while working to alleviate unsheltered homelessness in the area.
