Liberty Utilities to End NV Energy Partnership in Tahoe by 2027

Energy transition ahead for 50,000 Tahoe-area customers

Change in Electricity Providers for Tahoe Basin and Eastern Slope

The longstanding electricity supply arrangement between NV Energy and Liberty Utilities for the Tahoe Basin and the eastern slope is drawing to a close. Both companies have confirmed this impending transition.

Since 2009, NV Energy has been supplying electricity to Liberty Utilities, following the sale of parts of its California system. This arrangement, while extended periodically, was always envisioned as a temporary measure. Liberty Utilities, which partly depends on its solar projects for electricity, will start sourcing additional power from new suppliers by 2027.

This summer, Liberty Utilities is set to initiate a competitive bidding process, focusing on cost-effectiveness and an increased reliance on renewable energy. The changeover presents logistical challenges since the Tahoe region is not directly linked to California’s main power grid and relies on transmission from Nevada. Consequently, NV Energy will maintain its role in providing transmission services for Liberty’s customers even after it ceases electricity supply.

Both NV Energy and Liberty Utilities emphasize that the transition will be carried out in a cooperative manner.
