Wildfires Erupt Across Southeast Nebraska, Prompting Urgent Response
Thursday afternoon saw a sudden outbreak of wildfires across various parts of southeast Nebraska, resulting in necessary evacuations and road closures. The swift spread of the fires has been attributed to strong winds and dry conditions.
By 2:45 p.m., fires were reported in several counties, including Seward, Fillmore, Saline, Jefferson, Gage, and Lancaster. The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office identified at least four distinct fires in the county’s western region. One significant blaze approximately five miles east of Crete led to the temporary closure of a portion of Nebraska 33 in both directions. A fire near Southwest 112th Street and West Pioneers Boulevard prompted evacuations, but it was quickly contained.
In Gage County, another wildfire led authorities to shut down U.S. 77 south of Pickrell. The rapid response from local officials aimed to prevent further escalation and protect residents in the affected areas.
The National Weather Service had issued a red flag warning for the southern half of Nebraska on Thursday. At Lincoln Airport, wind gusts reached up to 55 miles per hour, exacerbating the fire risk and complicating firefighting efforts.
