Omaha-based Union Pacific unveils ‘No. 4547’ locomotive honoring President Trump

Union Pacific Unveils New Locomotives for America’s 250th Anniversary

In a move to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States, Union Pacific has introduced two new locomotives, joining a series of nationwide celebrations organized by the White House and various communities. This announcement complements Nebraska’s year-long celebration plans, spearheaded by Governor Jim Pillen, which include several events and displays at the Nebraska Capitol, despite some controversy over the content creators involved.

Union Pacific, headquartered in Omaha, recently revealed these commemorative locomotives. The first, No. 1776, known as “America 250,” features a design with an American flag and the America250 logo on the iconic armor-yellow Union Pacific locomotive. The second locomotive, No. 4547, pays tribute to former President Donald Trump, referencing his roles as the 45th and 47th president. This locomotive’s design incorporates two flags, including the current U.S. flag and a 13-star flag representing the original colonies, along with “Donald J. Trump” emblazoned in gold lettering.

As Union Pacific unveils these plans, it is also preparing for a significant merger with Norfolk Southern, a Georgia-based rail company. Announced in July, this potential $85 billion merger would create the first single-line transcontinental railroad, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. However, the merger has sparked concerns about safety and market access, leading to opposition from groups like the American Farm Bureau. Meanwhile, Nebraska legislators have proposed tax incentives to retain Union Pacific’s presence in the state amid the merger process.

Beyond the locomotives, Union Pacific has also shown support for the Trump administration through a private donation to the White House, aimed at constructing a $300 million ballroom. This new space is intended for hosting significant international functions, with a seating capacity of 650 people, compared to the current East Room’s 200-person capacity. The company has not disclosed the cost of either the donation or the new No. 4547 locomotive.

Union Pacific CEO Jim Vena expressed pride in participating in the nation’s milestone anniversary, stating, “Union Pacific is honored to take part in the 250th anniversary of this great nation. Each of these commemorative locomotives symbolizes important moments in the history of Union Pacific and the U.S. Our shared history shows the vital role railroads have played and will continue to play for generations to come.”

As part of the celebrations, Union Pacific will also send its Big Boy engine on a tour across the Western United States, including visits to Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California from late March to April 24. The tour’s Eastern leg will kick off on May 25, with stops in major cities like Omaha, Chicago, Buffalo, and Scranton, leading up to an Independence Day event in Philadelphia. Additional stops are planned in Altoona, St. Louis, and Kansas City before the tour wraps up on July 29.
