In an unexpected political twist, Nebraska’s gubernatorial race has taken on new dimensions with a high-profile endorsement. Former President Donald Trump publicly declared his support for Gov. Jim Pillen’s reelection bid, a move that could significantly influence the political landscape in the state.
Trump announced his backing of Pillen on Truth Social, stating his “Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election — HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!” Pillen expressed deep gratitude in a news release, acknowledging the endorsement as a testament to the value of “Conservative leadership,” and pledged to continue efforts to strengthen Nebraska.
This endorsement marks a notable shift from the previous gubernatorial race, where Trump supported Falls City businessman Charles Herbster instead of Pillen. Herbster, who was defeated by Pillen in a three-way primary, had been a strong Trump ally and was even considered by Trump for the role of U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.
Despite Trump’s endorsement of Pillen, Herbster has hinted at another gubernatorial run, expressing disappointment but acknowledging the logic behind Trump’s decision to support the incumbent Republican governor. In a social media statement, Herbster emphasized that his potential candidacy would focus on issues critical to Nebraskans, such as the struggles of farmers, ranchers, and businesses.
“This race is not about President Trump. It is about hard-working Nebraskans trying to make ends meet,” Herbster stated. He highlighted ongoing challenges faced by local industries and criticized the current administration’s handling of these issues. Herbster concluded by revealing that he is now “more inclined to run than I was just a few days ago.”
