Quarantine Cuisine: Discovering Nebraska Flavors in Isolation
On May 26, a unique lunch event took place, organized partly by Governor Jim Pillen’s office. Jake Rosmarin, unfamiliar with the local delicacy of a bierock, was introduced to a new taste sensation.
Rosmarin sampled a barbecue bacon variant of a Runza, complete with ranch dressing, frings—a delightful combination of fries and onion rings—and a prickly pear lemonade. “This is nice,” he remarked after his first bite, adding, “I could mess with a Runza.”
Becky Perrett, a spokeswoman for Runza, confirmed via email that the order originated from their 50th and Center streets location. She expressed that many Runza employees are entertained by Rosmarin’s social media updates, stating, “We were honored to share a taste of Nebraska with those in quarantine. Jake is a fan favorite around our office. His positivity in such a unique situation makes for a fun watch.”
While some businesses have contacted Rosmarin directly for delivery arrangements, most are coordinated through quarantine unit staff. Rosmarin shares these culinary experiences with all 10 current residents, as well as doctors and nurses, who dine in their respective rooms.
Rosmarin described that medical staff only enter his room for essential procedures like bloodwork, always donning masks, face shields, and protective gear. Meal deliveries are carefully managed, with nursing staff staying outside his door, passing food through on a tray or in a bag.
Beyond indulging in local cuisine, Rosmarin keeps himself occupied with various activities. He receives care packages from family, friends, and even strangers, filled with items to entertain him. His pastimes include reading, watching movies, sharing his iced latte and skincare routines on social media, crocheting a toy penguin, and assembling Lego kits. Recently, he has explored “diamond painting,” a craft involving placing small stones on a picture, currently working on a world map.
Rosmarin acknowledges that the Omaha meal deliveries stand out as the highlights of his quarantine experience. “I’m so grateful for all the businesses that have been kind to us here,” he shared. “I’ve really learned a lot about ‘Nebraska nice’ since being here. It’s a real thing.”
