Purdue Edges Nebraska 80-77 in Overtime, Creating Big Ten Three-Way Tie

Husker rally falls short as NU loses in OT to No. 13 Purdue

Purdue Edges Nebraska in Intense Overtime Thriller

In a gripping contest on Tuesday night, Purdue managed to fend off Nebraska’s fierce rally, securing an 80-77 victory in Lincoln. The win places Purdue in a three-way tie for third in the Big Ten standings, alongside Nebraska and Michigan State, all holding a 10-3 conference record.

Nebraska, now with a 22-3 season record, has faced setbacks in three of their last four games, all against top-ranked teams. Meanwhile, Purdue celebrated its 20th victory, improving to 20-4 overall.

Nebraska’s coach Fred Hoiberg remarked, “Give our guys credit, they found a way to dig in and battle back. The execution was on point, but you got to do it for 40 minutes in this league. If you want to win consistently, it can’t be a 20-minute game. You got to play for 40 minutes.” He emphasized that turnovers and allowing offensive rebounds were detrimental to the Huskers’ performance.

Purdue’s Early Domination

Purdue started the game with a commanding lead, quickly establishing a 14-1 advantage. As Hoiberg had anticipated, rebounding was crucial, with Purdue outmatching Nebraska 12-3 in this area within the first eight minutes. Oscar Cluff and Trey Kaufman-Renn were instrumental in this early dominance, securing eight rebounds between them.

Despite a slow offensive start, Nebraska began to find its rhythm through senior Rienk Mast, who made two three-pointers and provided an assist, cutting Purdue’s lead. However, Purdue’s strength in the paint and timely three-pointers extended their lead to 36-19, with a 9-0 scoring run highlighting their early control.

At halftime, Purdue maintained a substantial 40-24 lead, aided by Nebraska’s turnovers and shaky play.

Nebraska’s Resilient Comeback

The second half initially mirrored the first with Purdue extending their lead to 46-24. Yet, Nebraska’s defense intensified, creating turnovers and energizing the home crowd. Pryce Sandfort’s contributions helped narrow the gap to 52-43 during a 12-0 run.

Further efforts from Mast and Sam Hoiberg reduced the deficit to five, with Nebraska achieving an 18-2 run. The Boilermakers responded with a 10-0 run, led by C.J. Cox’s two three-pointers, bringing the score to 67-53.

Nebraska countered with their own 10-0 run, fueled by Mast’s free throws, Jamarques Lawrence’s five points, and a Braden Frager dunk, closing in at 67-63. Missed free throws by Purdue allowed Mast to tie the game at 68-68 with 27 seconds left, though he missed a crucial free shot that could have given Nebraska the lead.

Overtime Drama

In overtime, Purdue regained momentum with three-pointers from Loyer and Cox. Nebraska tied the game at 75 with Sandfort’s free throws and Lawrence’s three-pointer. Sandfort’s layup pushed Nebraska ahead 77-75, but Purdue’s resilience, highlighted by Cluff’s and-one layup, shifted the lead back.

A slip by Lawrence on an inbounds pass handed the ball to Purdue, sealing their victory with successful free throws. Nebraska’s attempt to counter in the final seconds was thwarted, concluding the intense match at 80-77.

Purdue’s Loyer and Smith were top scorers with 18 and 13 points, respectively, while Nebraska’s Mast and Lawrence led with 18 and 16 points. Nebraska now turns its attention to a home game against Northwestern on Saturday.
