Documentary Sequel to Revisit Infamous Nebraska Tragedy and Its Impact

The chilling events that unfolded in a small Nebraska town in the early 1990s continue to resonate across the nation. The story of Brandon Teena, a 21-year-old transgender man, who was brutally raped and murdered, along with two witnesses, has been etched into public memory, partly due to its cinematic portrayal in “Boys Don’t Cry.” However, it was a documentary that preceded the film by a year that ignited a broader conversation about violence and hatred against the LGBTQ community.

The creators of that influential documentary, “The Brandon Teena Story,” have embarked on a new project, tentatively titled “Aftermath,” which is scheduled for release in late 2027. Based in New York, the filmmakers aim to delve into the long-lasting effects of the tragedy, revisit key individuals from Teena’s life, and assess the evolving landscape of transgender rights and perceptions in today’s divisive climate.

“Through these lives, we’re looking at what has changed, what has not changed, are LGBTQ+ transgendered lives better now or worse, is Nebraska better now or worse, and … where are we going,” remarked Greta Olafsdottir, one of the documentary creators.

Olafsdottir, alongside her partner both professionally and personally, Susan Muska, is set to explore a significant amount of material. The Nebraska legislative landscape, which has been at the center of national discussions, will also feature prominently. In 2023, the state passed a law prohibiting gender transition surgeries for individuals under 19, coupled with the regulation of other gender-related medical care, such as puberty blockers, for the same age group. The bill attracted widespread attention, fueled by a notable three-week filibuster led by Sen. Machaela Cavanaugh and public protests.

Further legislative actions in 2025 saw Nebraska lawmakers enacting a ban on student-athletes participating in sports teams that do not match their birth sex. This law’s potential entrenchment into the state constitution, which would significantly complicate any future repeal efforts, may be presented to Nebraska voters in an upcoming referendum.
