Nebraska DHHS Completes November SNAP Payments Post-Government Shutdown

Nebraska sends out remaining SNAP benefits for November

SNAP Benefits Fully Restored in Nebraska Following Government Shutdown

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed that full November benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have been disbursed to residents. This follows the resolution of a 43-day federal government shutdown that had previously delayed these vital resources.

Over 150,000 Nebraskans depend on SNAP benefits, and some recipients had already received up to 65% of their expected allotment earlier in the week. The department had announced on Wednesday that it distributed partial November benefits to alleviate some of the immediate needs.

Moving forward, the Department of Health and Human Services assured that SNAP will return to its regular disbursement schedule, with benefits provided at the start of each month. Despite the swift restoration, the temporary disruption has led to increased demand at local food banks and pantries.

The Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska reported a significant rise in the number of individuals seeking assistance. The organization experienced nearly double the attendance at its food market in early November compared to the previous month. “Certainly, in November we saw a significant increase in the people who were needing food assistance,” stated Katie Patrick, the executive director of the organization.

In addition to these challenges, new regulations have rendered refugees and other immigrants with temporary legal status ineligible for SNAP benefits, potentially impacting food security for these groups.
