Community Spirit Shines Through at Lincoln Repair Café
Every item that finds its way to the Lincoln Repair Café tells a story, and for both visitors and volunteers, these stories make each day at the café unique. “I’m just always fascinated by the stuff that people bring in,” said Kettler. “You never know what’s going to come in. And we do our best. We can’t ever guarantee anything, but it’s always fascinating.”
The café has an uncanny ability to transform ordinary repair tasks into meaningful community experiences. James recalled a particular instance at the sewing table, illustrating the café’s spirit of collaboration: “The line was taking a little long, and the person second in line said, ‘All I wanted was a couple buttons sewed on,’ and the third in line said, ‘Well I know how to do that.’ And so, number three taught number two how to sew on a button. It’s like a sense of community teaching.”
Volunteers at the café are a diverse group, including retired tradespeople and enthusiastic hobbyists. Many of them, like James, have honed their repair skills out of necessity over the years. The café benefits from the support of Repair Café International, which provides local chapters with essential resources such as starter kits, documentation, and branding.
In addition to hands-on support, the organization is an advocate for right-to-repair legislation, highlighting challenges faced by consumers who wish to repair products from companies like Apple and John Deere, which are often difficult to fix independently.
The Lincoln Repair Café is open to new volunteers and walk-in visitors, fostering a welcoming environment for all who are interested. For more details, visit the group’s Facebook page.
