Iowa defense suffocates Nebraska attacks, knocks off Huskers Tuesday night

Hawkeyes’ Defense Stifles Huskers in Tight Contest

Iowa’s formidable defense took center stage on Tuesday night, as they managed to secure a 57-52 victory over the No. 9 ranked Nebraska men’s basketball team in Iowa City. This outcome saw Nebraska’s record slide to 22-4 overall and 11-4 in Big Ten play, while Iowa improved to 19-7 overall and 9-6 in conference matchups.

The opening half was a defensive showcase between the top two defensive teams in the Big Ten conference.

Pryce Sandfort, a transfer to Nebraska and the team’s leading scorer this season, managed to score five points with a layup and a corner three-pointer. Despite his efforts, Sandfort was met with boos from the Hawkeye fans each time he touched the ball, starting from the lineup introductions.

Eight minutes into the game, Nebraska held a narrow 12-9 lead.

However, Nebraska soon encountered a significant scoring drought, failing to score from the field for over seven minutes. A series of free throws allowed them to stay in contention until Braden Frager’s close-range shots and Sam Hoiberg’s reverse layup helped Nebraska regain a 21-19 lead.

Iowa swiftly counterattacked.

The Hawkeyes capitalized on a 14-2 run with successful shots from various positions. Contributions from Alvaro Folgueiras and Bennett Stirtz, Iowa’s leading scorer, helped the team gain a 33-23 lead.

In response, Hoiberg drove to the basket for a layup with 40 seconds remaining in the half, allowing Nebraska one more scoring opportunity. Cale Jacobsen hit a crucial three-pointer at the buzzer, narrowing the gap to 33-28 by halftime.

Nebraska’s struggles with rebounding surfaced again, as they were outrebounded 19-5 in the first half. Sandfort led the Huskers with seven points, while Stirtz contributed 13 points for Iowa in the opening 20 minutes.

Just 11 seconds into the second half, Iowa’s Cooper Koch extended the lead with a three-pointer. Nebraska responded with a 6-0 run, featuring a putback shot from Rienk Mast and a fastbreak layup from Berke Büyüktuncel, tightening the score to 36-34 in favor of Iowa.

Sandfort later tied the game at 39 with a three-pointer, and a left-handed layup from Mast gave Nebraska their first lead of the half. The teams continued to exchange baskets, leveling the score at 43.

Then, Stirtz made his presence felt.

The transfer from Southwest Missouri State and Drake scored seven consecutive points for Iowa, leading them to a 50-45 advantage with 3:32 left on the clock. His performances included a notable step-back three-pointer that energized the Carver-Hawkeye Arena crowd.

Nebraska utilized their second successful coaches’ challenge of the night to convert two Sandfort free throws, trimming the score to 50-47.

With the shot clock winding down, Stirtz drew a foul on a three-point attempt and successfully made all three free throws, pushing the lead to 53-47 with 36 seconds remaining.

Jamarques Lawrence answered with a pivotal three-pointer, cutting Iowa’s lead to three points. Nebraska then fouled Cooper Koch, who made both of his free throws, bringing the score to 55-50.

Mast attempted a three-pointer from the left wing but missed, allowing Iowa to secure the rebound and ultimately the victory.

Stirtz finished the game with 25 points, while Sandfort was the only Nebraska player to score in double figures with 13 points. Iowa also dominated the boards, holding a 37-24 rebounding advantage.

Next up for Nebraska is a home game against Penn State on Saturday.
