In a notable shift within the Nebraska football coaching staff, Butler has transitioned from coaching defensive backs in 2024 to taking the helm of the entire defense this season. This change comes after a season where the team showed mixed results on the field.
Nebraska’s 2025 season concluded with a 7-5 record, highlighted by two significant losses against Penn State and Iowa. In these back-to-back defeats, the team conceded 37 and 40 points, respectively, showcasing areas for improvement in their defensive strategies.
Despite these setbacks, Butler’s defense has excelled in certain aspects, particularly in pass defense. The unit ended the regular season ranked 2nd in the nation for passing yards allowed, with opponents averaging only 141 yards per game. However, the same cannot be said for their rushing defense, which ranks 14th in the Big Ten and 97th nationally, yielding over 171 yards per game.
