Independent Candidate Suspends Campaign Amid Family Health Concerns

A potential game-changer in Nebraska’s 1st District Congressional race has taken a step back. Austin Ahlman, a candidate known for spotlighting his family’s challenges, has announced the suspension of his campaign, citing personal reasons.

In a poignant social media post, Ahlman revealed that his father’s cancer, previously in remission, has returned. The candidate shared, “My family and I have gone from speaking about the future in terms of decades to mere months.”

Prioritizing family over politics, Ahlman emphasized, “Family comes first — always.” This decision halts a campaign that had already made significant progress, with enough signatures gathered to secure a ballot spot.

Ahlman, known for his investigative reporting for The American Prospect and The Intercept, moved back to Norfolk in 2025. He returned to support his father following his diagnosis and to address financial issues concerning their family home. Tragically, Ahlman’s mother passed away by suicide earlier this year.

With Ahlman’s exit, the race now narrows to three candidates: Republican incumbent Mike Flood, Democrat Chris Backemeyer, and Libertarian Nik Sandman.

In a gesture of empathy, Rep. Mike Flood shared his understanding of Ahlman’s situation, having withdrawn from a gubernatorial race in 2012 due to his wife’s breast cancer diagnosis. “I respect Austin for engaging in the American system and running for office,” Flood stated. “I respect him even more for putting his family first, and I can say with confidence that he will not regret that decision.”
