Residents in Nebraska and Kansas Experience Minor Earthquake
On Sunday afternoon, a minor earthquake was felt by individuals across Nebraska and Kansas, prompting a flurry of activity on social media as residents shared their experiences.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake registered a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter Scale. The epicenter was located approximately 3 miles east of Cowles, a small village in south-central Nebraska, near the Kansas border. This type of earthquake is classified as “light” and is not typically associated with significant damage.
Despite its modest magnitude, the quake was felt by many, with reports coming in from areas as distant as Omaha, Nebraska, and Manhattan, Kansas. The USGS received numerous accounts from individuals who experienced the tremor firsthand.
Following the initial quake, an aftershock measuring 2.6 in magnitude was recorded about 90 minutes later, roughly a mile east of the original location.
While earthquakes are not common in Nebraska, the state typically experiences one or two minor tremors annually. The most recent earthquake with a magnitude of 4 or higher in Nebraska occurred in December 2023, also in Webster County.
