Rep. Huizenga’s Utility Donations Amid Rising Michigan Rates

Bill Huizenga took utility donations as rates rose across Michigan

Michigan Utility Rate Hikes Linked to Political Donations Amidst Rising Energy Costs

Utility companies in Michigan, notably DTE and Consumers Energy, face scrutiny for their recent rate increases following substantial donations to Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga. Over the past years, Huizenga has received more than $167,000 from the corporate PACs of these companies, a move raising concerns among Michigan residents affected by rising utility bills.

DTE Energy, serving 1.3 million customers, recently secured approval for an additional $242 million rate hike, resulting in a 4.6% increase for the average household’s monthly bill. Following this, they filed for another rate increase set for 2027. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel criticized these moves, stating, “DTE is raking in record profits while turning around and asking Michigan families to foot the bill for bloated, unjustified costs,” and urged a substantial reduction of DTE’s latest rate request by 85%.

Consumers Energy, providing services to 6.7 million residents, also increased rates last year, collecting an additional $153.8 million. Their proposed 13.3% rate hike in June 2025 was blocked, yet they pursued an 8.2% increase in December 2025.

During this period, Huizenga supported federal legislation that potentially elevates utility rates further. His backing of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which curtails Biden-era clean energy initiatives and facilitates new AI data centers, could raise Michigan’s utility bills by an average of $320 annually, according to reports. Additionally, Huizenga endorsed a 2025 appropriations bill targeting a Department of Energy program designed to aid low-income households in improving energy efficiency, potentially increasing overall utility expenses.

The escalation of utility costs adds to the financial strain on families amid other rising expenses. Donald Trump’s tariff policies increased retail prices by 7% last year, while ongoing conflicts in Iran have driven gas prices beyond $4 per gallon, compounding the economic pressures on consumers.

As the political landscape intensifies, Huizenga is campaigning for a ninth Congressional term, with his Democratic challenger to be determined in the August 4 primary.
