Democratic Legislators Appeal to Trump for Tariff Policy Reversal

A letter from Democratic state legislators has been sent to President Donald Trump, urging a reconsideration of the tariff policy inaugurated a year ago. This plea emphasizes the detrimental economic effects experienced as a result.
Notably, the tariffs were announced on April 2 last year, a date dubbed “Liberation Day” by Trump. These tariffs, applied to products from 90 countries, were intended to rejuvenate American manufacturing and job markets.
However, legislators argue in their correspondence, “Instead, your Liberation Day tariffs have liberated our constituents of their savings, their jobs, and their economic security.”
Tariffs function as taxes on imported merchandise, which ultimately burden American businesses. These costs are often transferred to consumers, leading to increased retail prices. According to an analysis by the Tax Foundation, these tariffs contributed to a 7% rise in retail prices over the past year, affecting items such as vehicles, clothing, toys, and furniture significantly.
The legality of the tariffs has been contested in courts. In a ruling earlier this year, the U.S. Supreme Court declared the legal foundation for the tariffs as unlawful, though it suggested alternative methods could be pursued by Trump to potentially re-impose them.
Adjustments to the tariff policy, including lifting some tariffs and introducing new ones, have created a complex situation for businesses and consumers, who now face a challenging economic landscape.
The letter highlights further economic decline stating, “The manufacturing sector has lost tens of thousands of jobs, with employment declining every single month through December. The economy has slowed to a crawl, with GDP growth of just 1.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025.”
Economists attribute the tariffs as a factor in worsening an affordability crisis compounded by persistent inflation and corporate practices. This economic strain intensified following the recent U.S. invasion of Iran, which caused gas prices to exceed $4 a gallon for the first time in three years.
The legislators’ appeal requests that Trump revoke the tariffs, reimburse tariff expenses to citizens, and prioritize economic measures that support working families.
The letter concludes with a pointed message, “It’s not too late to change course and finally focus on what Americans actually care about.”
The appeal bears the signatures of lawmakers from several states, including Maryland, New Hampshire, Illinois, Iowa, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Texas, Minnesota, and Michigan. Among them is Maryland Rep. Adrian Boafo, who is currently campaigning for a congressional seat.
