Important Achievement as 10% of Global Ocean Receives Protection

An essential global milestone has been reached as more than 10% of the world’s ocean now falls under official protection, according to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

UNEP announced this week that over the past two years, a significant area of 5 million square kilometers of the ocean – larger than the entire European Union – has obtained protection status. Consequently, the total share of ocean under conservation measures now stands at 10.01%, a significant rise from 8.6% in 2024.

Neville Ash, director of UNEP’s World Conservation Monitoring Centre, expressed the significance of this accomplishment, stating, “We all rely on the ocean for survival; it’s responsible for producing over half of the world’s oxygen. Thus, this is indeed a moment to celebrate.”

However, Ash also highlighted the immense task that still awaits. He referenced the 2022 agreement, where nations committed themselves to the goal of conserving 30% of the Earth’s land and sea by 2030. UNEP estimates that to meet this ambitious target, an area equivalent to the size of the Indian Ocean must gain protection status within the next four years.

The management and enforcement of protected areas are also a significant challenge. A recent report exposed the exploitation of UK’s marine protected areas by industrial trawlers. Ash emphasized the importance of effective management, asserting, “It is critical that both new and existing protected areas are efficiently managed to ensure positive outcomes for both people and nature.”
