Transition to Renewable Energy: The World Embarks on the Electricity Era
The global energy market is witnessing a paradigm shift as renewable energy sources increasingly edge out fossil fuels. This is according to the International Energy Agency (IEA)’s global energy review, which underlines how the world is rapidly entering an electrified age. This transition is marked by a fast-paced electrification process across numerous economies.
In 2025, the global energy demand continued its upward trajectory. Interestingly, for the first time, solar energy emerged as the front runner, catering to a whopping 25% of the new demand. This indicates a significant milestone in the journey towards sustainable energy, with renewable sources meeting the largest share of the growing demand.
The IEA’s report also underscores the increasing significance of battery storage in electricity grids. Battery storage technology was identified as the fastest-growing power sector technology in 2025. This trend of relying on batteries for electricity storage is expected to gain more momentum in the coming years.
The report, however, isn’t devoid of some concerning figures. Despite the rise in renewable energy, the demand for fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal also experienced a growth in 2025, although the rate was slower than the previous year. The surge in electric vehicle sales, which saw a 20% increase, helped keep oil demand under control.
Despite the positive strides in renewable energy, global energy-related emissions increased by 0.4% in 2025 instead of falling as needed. On a hopeful note, the IEA’s findings corroborate other research reports that China’s emissions saw a contraction in 2025.
