Six Excelling Marine Protected Areas: An Insight into Effective Ocean Conservation

The establishment of new marine protected areas (MPAs) is a common occurrence in recent times, with the latest additions being in Sao Tome and Principe, and French Polynesia. However, the true challenge lies not only in creating these MPAs, but more crucially, in their effective conservation and management.

The Blue Park Awards is one platform that honors marine protected areas setting the standard for effective ocean conservation. This week, the awards recognized six marine protected areas for their remarkable efforts in marine protection. These include Banc-des-Américains in Canada, KAWAWANA Indigenous community heritage area in Senegal, Nosy Hara national park, Nosy Tanihely national park, and Sahamalaza-îles Radama national park in Madagascar, and the Rapa Nui marine protected area in Chile.

These winners, selected by conservation experts from the Marine Conservation Institute, were subject to rigorous and scientific evaluations of their effectiveness. The quality and standard of these MPAs demonstrate their commitment to marine protection and sustainability.

The six winning marine protected areas collectively cover an impressive 455,000 square miles of ocean. This inclusion brings the total Blue Park network to over 2.6 million square miles of effectively protected ocean spanning across 30 countries and Indigenous territories.

Dr. Lance Morgan, president of Marine Conservation Institute, expressed his hope that these successful MPAs would inspire other ocean conservationists globally. He emphasized that effective marine protection is achievable across diverse cultures, geographies, and political systems, and should be the standard for future MPAs.
