Cincinnati faced dangerous travel conditions as snow blanketed the streets, complicating the urgent journey of an ambulance carrying a baby named Bryson to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital for advanced treatment.

In response, the Ohio Department of Transportation called upon snowplow driver Joe Estes to aid in the mission.

Kelly Besl, clinical director of Cincinnati Children’s Critical Care Transport Team, noted the unusual nature of the situation, stating, “I’ve been here for three years, this is the first time we’ve had to think outside the box.”

Tasked with clearing a route, Estes led the ambulance through the storm, turning a usual 15-minute drive into a 30-minute endeavor due to the inclement weather. His efforts ensured the ambulance reached its destination without incident.

“It was probably the most important trek of my ODOT career,” Estes reflected. “It wasn’t just pushing snow.”

Having served as a snowplow driver for over seven years, Estes remarked on the unprecedented nature of the task. As a father, he felt the emotional impact once he successfully completed the journey.

The ambulance team expressed initial anxiety but found comfort in Estes’ guidance, which allowed them to concentrate on the child’s well-being during the journey.

Reports confirmed that Bryson and his family were in good condition following the ordeal.

Despite receiving accolades for his actions, Estes expressed modesty about his involvement.

“I am thrilled to have taken a role in this operation,” he commented. “By no means am I the hero. I’m just a truck driver, and I absolutely hope everything works out for the best.”
