In a touching tribute to a young life lost too soon, a community is coming together to celebrate and remember Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, who was tragically murdered during a run nearly two years ago. This weekend, Athens will host a special event to honor her memory.
The Laken Hope Foundation is spearheading the “Run for Your Life” 5K and memorial, scheduled for Saturday. This event aims to unite participants in both physical activity and reflection.
The day will commence with the race at 8 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 10 a.m. at Tate Plaza. Riley’s family will introduce the service, offering personal insights and memories.
An interactive session with U.S. House Representative Mike Collins will also take place during the event. Collins, who played a pivotal role in the creation of the Laken Riley Act, a bill passed last year, will engage with attendees in a Q&A session.
The event will feature a sermon titled “Run for Your Life,” delivered by Pastor Derek Anglin. The memorial will conclude with an hour dedicated to worship.
Proceeds generated from the race will predominantly benefit the Laken Hope Foundation, supporting its ongoing initiatives.
