Nebraska Football Coach Implements Strategic Changes After Recent Loss
In the wake of a last-minute defeat at home against Washington, Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule is making strategic adjustments. The Huskers have faced a trio of consecutive losses, with each game slipping away after holding a late lead and struggling to score more than 17 points on offense.
Rhule expressed confidence in his coaching staff, stating, “I’m just going to worry about this week. I trust our coaches. They’re going to go coach.”
To address these challenges, Rhule has announced changes in the coaching setup. Offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, offensive line coach Geep Wade, and safeties coach Tyler Yelk will now operate from the press box. This move aims to provide a quieter environment for strategic decision-making.
“I’m moving a bunch of coaches up in the box on both sides this week. Dana will go up, Geep will go up, and that was Dana’s suggestion, like go up,” Rhule explained. “Lonnie (Teasley) will be on the field, and then Yelk will go up on defense so that they can, you know, maybe some of the things you’re talking — like just from a very quiet atmosphere.”
Run game coordinator Lonnie Teasley will transition from the press box to the field to provide on-ground support.
Rhule emphasized the need for a more balanced offensive strategy, especially after quarterback Anthony Colandrea’s season-high 44 pass attempts in the match against Washington.
In an impassioned 15-minute opening statement at his press conference, Rhule conveyed his commitment to the team, saying he would “run in front of a train” for his players and urged perseverance amidst adversity.
“You look in the boat when it’s rocking, you see who’s in the boat and who’s standing on the outside, and the boat’s rocking,” Rhule said. “But you know why the boat’s rocking, too? Because we’re a good enough team that we can take the No. 5 team in the country (Indiana) to a play and feel like it was a missed opportunity.”
As they seek to break their losing streak, the Huskers are set to face Illinois on Friday at 7 p.m. Central time. The game will be broadcast on Fox.
