Iconic Athens restaurant, Weaver D's, closes its doors

Legendary Eatery Weaver D’s Bids Farewell to Athens

Iconic soul food joint Weaver D’s, which famously inspired an R.E.M album title, closed its doors for the last time on February 26th, marking the end of an era for Athens, Georgia. Dedicated patrons gathered early to enjoy one final meal from the beloved establishment.

Customers braved the rain and formed a line that stretched beyond the awning and around the driveway, eager to savor their favorite dishes one last time. Among them was Yonatan, who nostalgically recalled, “The last time I went to Weaver D’s, I was 8 or 9 years old. My dad was a UGA student and he grew up around the time of the big 90s bands. Weaver D’s was the place he came. I remember the pound cake or whatever. Delicious. I think it’s gonna be the thing I get today.” He added, “This is a place that he grew up with. I don’t know, there’s something a little special about coming back for the final day, reliving that childhood memory.”

Dexter Weaver, the owner and operator, opened Weaver D’s in 1986 and has been serving up soul food and desserts for nearly four decades. His contribution to the community and the culinary world will be fondly remembered.

The property has now been acquired by Joe Nedza, known for his ownership of Baddie’s Burger House, signaling a new chapter for the location.
