Trump Dismisses Concerns Over Rising Costs as “Fake News”
President Donald Trump recently dismissed concerns about the rising cost of living in the United States, labeling them as “fake news.” This statement comes despite numerous economic indicators pointing to increased expenses for Americans compared to the previous year.
In a discussion with reporters at the White House, Trump argued against the notion that affordability is a pressing issue, stating, “There’s this fake narrative that the Democrats talk about—affordability. I think they’re getting fake news from guys like you … Affordability is a hoax that was started by Democrats.”
Political Focus on Cost of Living
The term “affordability” has gained traction in the political arena after Democrats achieved significant victories in Virginia, New Jersey, and Georgia, using campaigns that centered on the cost of living. This focus continued in a recent special U.S. House race in Tennessee, where Democrat Aftyn Behn came within nine points of defeating Republican Matt Van Epps, despite Trump winning the district by 22 points last year.
Economic Indicators of Rising Costs
Recent reports highlight the increasing costs faced by Americans. According to a report from Defend America Action, prices for Thanksgiving staples such as turkey, canned cranberries, frozen peas, cheddar cheese, and sweet potatoes have increased significantly from last year. Consequently, nearly half of Americans opted for alternative meats like chicken during the holiday to mitigate costs.
Looking ahead to Christmas, PNC Bank’s annual Christmas Price Index reports a 4.4% rise in gift costs from 2024 and a 9.8% increase from 2023.
Impact of Tariffs and Policies
Trump’s tariff policies have been cited by major retailers like Walmart and Home Depot as factors forcing price hikes. “Higher tariffs will result in higher prices,” commented Walmart CEO Doug McMillon during a May earnings call. “We’re wired for everyday low prices, but the magnitude of these increases is more than any retailer can absorb.”
Additionally, the impending expiration of Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) subsidies, which assist about 22 million Americans, threatens to further strain family budgets. While some Republicans advocate for extending these subsidies, the majority, including Trump, oppose it.
Political and Public Reaction
Trump’s remarks have been met with criticism from Democratic leaders. New York Sen. Chuck Schumer expressed his disapproval on X, stating, “The only hoax is Donald’s repeated lies about the economy. The things we need most—groceries, housing, utilities—cost more. We all feel the pain, and it’s happening on his watch.”
Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern echoed this sentiment, saying, “Affordability might not mean anything to billionaire grifters like Trump, but it sure means a lot to the American people. He should try actually talking to working folks for once in his life.”
Public Sentiment on Living Costs
Recent polling suggests that the American public shares these concerns. An Associated Press-NORC poll reveals that over half of Americans view grocery costs as a major stressor. Similarly, a Reuters poll found that many voters consider cost of living a key issue for the 2026 midterm elections.
