Hundreds of fans crowd Baxter Street to see Megan Moroney

Athens Welcomes Back UGA Alum and Country Star Megan Moroney

On a bright Friday morning in Athens, a crowd eagerly gathered along Baxter Street, anticipating a special appearance by Megan Moroney, a rising star in the country music scene and University of Georgia graduate. The gathering wasn’t just to celebrate local talent; fans were also excited about the announcement that Moroney’s new album would be hitting the shelves early next year.

Among the first to arrive was Corleigh Tyner, who embraced Moroney’s style with a sparkly jean skirt, a hot pink frilly tank top, and cowboy boots. “I’m very excited for the upcoming release because, especially ‘Am I Ok?,’ when it first came out, was on repeat. I absolutely loved it, so I’m very excited for the next album,” she exclaimed.

The news of Moroney’s visit to Raising Cane’s was a surprise, with the announcement appearing on social media just the night before. Tyner described her trip as “very last minute” and “very spontaneous!”

Moroney, who graduated with a marketing degree from UGA in 2020, shared insights about her forthcoming album, ‘Cloud 9’, which will be released in February. The album promises to convey a message of empowerment, a theme that has matured since her days creating music in the Kappa Delta Sorority house in Athens.

Reflecting on her journey, Moroney said, “Any time I come here, and I drive through downtown or down Milledge, I’m just reminded I used to just be the sorority girl who would just make up songs in my sorority house and didn’t have anyone to listen to them, really.” She continued, “I feel like I’ve lived enough life and grown up enough to where not only do I feel qualified to tell myself you are worth it, I feel qualified to tell other people, too. My feet feel firmly planted in my artistry.”
