Coleman Barks: The Celebrated Translator Remembered by the Athens Community

Known for his profound influence on literary translation, Coleman Barks left an indelible mark on the Athens community and beyond. Since joining the University of Georgia’s Department of English in 1967, Barks became internationally acclaimed for his translations of Rumi, the esteemed 13th-century Persian poet.

The passing of Barks on February 23rd in Athens led to a significant wave of tributes, underscoring his impact and legacy. In a heartfelt memorial service at the UGA Chapel on April 23rd, Alan Flurry, a close friend of Barks, shared his memories and reflections. Flurry also discussed Barks’ life and contributions in a conversation with WUGA’s Emma Auer.
