Georgia Suspends Gas Tax, Offers Tax Rebates Amid Rising Fuel Prices

Gov. Kemp suspends Georgia gas tax

Gas Tax Suspension Offers Relief to Georgia Drivers

Georgia motorists are set to experience some relief at the gas pump following a recent announcement from Governor Brian Kemp. As of Friday, Kemp has implemented a 60-day suspension of the state’s gas tax, a decision that comes amid climbing gas prices in Georgia, which are currently averaging nearly $3.80 per gallon. This suspension translates to a saving of 33 cents per gallon for gasoline and 37 cents per gallon for diesel for drivers.

Governor Kemp highlighted the broader financial relief efforts by stating, “Since 2021 we have now enacted four income tax refunds, the largest income tax cut in state history, targeted suspensions of the state gas tax, four separate times and have now done two rounds of property tax relief. All told, that is over $11 billion of taxpayers’ money that we have put back in their pocket.”

The recent legislative move also includes the signing of House Bill 1000 into law, ensuring rebate checks for the state’s taxpayers this year. Kemp emphasized the practical impact of this measure, noting, “That money isn’t just a number, it represents help with groceries, rent, bills, clothes for your kids and other needs facing Georgia families. It’s meaningful relief for working Georgians at a time when they really need it.”

For Georgia residents who have filed taxes for the past two years, the rebates will amount to $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of households, and $500 for couples.
