Defense Motions Denied in Day 3 of Tara Baker Murder Trial

Judge denies mistrial requests in Tara Baker murder case

On the third day of the trial concerning the murder of Tara Baker, courtroom tensions ran high as the defense attorney for the accused, Edrick Faust, sought a mistrial on two occasions. Defense attorney Ahmad Crews, representing Faust, argued for the mistrial during the proceedings on Wednesday.

“Granting a of a mistrial by the court is a very, of course, as you are well aware, extreme option,” emphasized Judge Lott. “And it is done in very limited circumstances, where the matters that have been presented in court are of such a prejudicial level that the defendant cannot receive a fair trial. With regard to your motion, you have not sufficiently shown this court that that exists, so I’m going to deny your motion.”

The motions were firmly rejected by Western Circuit Chief Superior Court Judge Lisa Lott, who communicated her decision to Crews outside the jury’s observation.

Judge Lott expressed her disapproval of Crews’ courtroom demeanor, stating, “Having a slight tantrum every time you get a ruling you don’t agree with is really not appropriate.”

The prosecution has outlined a harrowing account of the University of Georgia law student’s final moments, alleging that she was brutally beaten, raped, and stabbed before her residence was set ablaze to eliminate evidence. Faust is currently facing serious charges, including murder, arson, and aggravated assault.
