Athens Mayoral Candidates Share Final Thoughts as Election Day Nears

With the Athens-Clarke County mayoral election approaching its decisive final stage, candidates Dexter Fisher and Tim Denson have participated in a range of discussions to outline their visions for the city’s future. As the runoff election looms, both contenders have limited time to sway voters before June 16th.

The mayoral race began with five individuals vying for the position, but following the primary election on May 19th, Fisher and Denson emerged as the leading candidates. Denson secured 37% of the initial votes, while Fisher garnered 27%. The recent completion of early voting marks a critical juncture in the contest.

Throughout the election period, Fisher and Denson have appeared on multiple debate stages. In a recent interview on WUGA, hosted by Emma Auer, the candidates engaged in a more relaxed dialogue, offering insights into underexplored issues. The conversation was slightly edited for clarity, providing voters with a clearer picture of each candidate’s priorities.

Tim Denson serves as the Clarke County School District Board of Education member for District 5, while Dexter Fisher is the Athens-Clarke County Commissioner for the same district. As the election draws to a close, both candidates continue their efforts to connect with the electorate and present their qualifications for leading Athens for the next four years.
