Budget Season Begins in Athens-Clarke County with Key Presentation
The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission have officially launched the budget season, marked by a significant presentation from the county’s manager. This presentation, held on Tuesday, set the stage for discussions about the county’s financial plans.
During the meeting, County Manager Bob Cowell outlined his budgetary priorities, a session traditionally known as “Big Rocks.” Cowell indicated that utilizing the rainy-day reserves, known as the fund balance, might be necessary this year.
“This is probably the last year we can rely on this as way in which we can address those general capital [needs],” Cowell stated, emphasizing the need for caution as the fund balance is nearing its limits.
Cowell expressed concerns regarding the county’s revenue growth, which, despite being positive, is not keeping pace with the increasing expenditures.
The final budget approval by the Commission is anticipated in early June.
