Athens-Clarke County Considers New Regulations for Data Centers

Local environmental groups release recommendations for data center rules

As Athens-Clarke County grapples with the future of data centers in the region, county officials are on the brink of setting new regulations. A public meeting tonight will place the spotlight on these potential rules that aim to regulate the development of data storage facilities.

Following persistent advocacy from both residents and local officials, the Planning Commission is set to discuss a set of proposed regulations. These rules, which could shape the future of new data centers, are designed to confine such facilities to specific zoning areas. Data centers consuming over 5 megawatts of electricity daily would need to undergo a special use procedure, ensuring large operations come under scrutiny.

The meeting could also see the Planning Commission forwarding a recommendation to the county Commission for further action. Meanwhile, local organizations, including the Coalition of Athens Scientists and Athens Land Trust, have voiced their opinions on social media, advocating for increased public oversight and the mandatory use of renewable energy sources by future data centers.
