Athens Celebrates Juneteenth with Tributes to Black Leadership
In a historic celebration, Athens commemorated Juneteenth with events honoring its first Black mayor and former Black elected officials. The city marked the occasion with two distinct celebrations, reflecting on the significance of the liberation of enslaved Black Americans and the contributions of its Black leaders.
On Friday, June 19th, Historic Athens, in conjunction with the city, orchestrated the ‘Athens Juneteenth Celebration’ downtown. During this event, attendees supported a petition to dedicate a new green space on East Washington Street to Athens’ pioneering Black elected officials, garnering over 1,000 signatures.
The festivities continued on Saturday, June 20th, with the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement spearheading the ‘Classic City Juneteenth Music and Arts Festival’ at Georgia Square Mall. This event featured a libation ceremony and a parade leading into the mall, where speakers, including newly elected Mayor Dexter Fisher, addressed the crowd, emphasizing the holiday’s historical importance.
