Winston-Salem Schools Consider Pre-K Cuts Amid Funding Shortfall

WS/FCS anticipates $3M reduction in funding for Pre-K

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Faces Potential Pre-K Classroom Reductions

The possibility of reducing the number of Pre-K classrooms is looming over Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools as financial constraints mount. The district is grappling with a projected loss exceeding $3 million in federal and state funding for the upcoming year.

Key financial challenges include a significant reduction in federal Title 1 allocations and state funds aimed at supporting exceptional children. Additionally, the district expects to lose 41 slots in the NC Pre-K program, alongside the non-renewal of essential Head Start funding.

During a recent school board meeting, Chief Academic Officer Paula Wilkins addressed these issues, highlighting the potential need to consolidate classrooms. Wilkins emphasized the importance of maintaining Pre-K services while ensuring fiscal responsibility, stating, “Where we can, we want to provide Pre-K services. But we have to do it in a way we can manage it and make it fiscally responsible.”

The district’s challenge is further complicated by past decisions to expand Pre-K offerings using a temporary funding source that expired in 2022. As the district navigates these hurdles, a preliminary plan suggests reducing the number of Pre-K classrooms from 82 to 68. However, final decisions have yet to be made.
