Volunteering for Purpose: Karl Michael Iglesias’ “Muerto de Sed” Poem

A poem titled MUERTO DE SED is displayed, discussing themes of community, hunger, spiritual longing, and daily life, with repeated references to water and gathering at the shore.

As global challenges become increasingly overwhelming, finding solace in community service can offer a sense of purpose. This was true for Milwaukee poet Karl Michael Iglesias, who discovered meaningful connections through his volunteer work at a free lunch program.

His insights are captured in the poem “Muerto de Sed.”

Understanding Wisconsin, Together.

WPR’s “Wisconsin Today” newsletter keeps you connected to the state you love without feeling overwhelmed. No paywall. No agenda. No corporate filter.

Iglesias shared the following with “Wisconsin Life” about the experience that inspired him to write “Muerto de Sed.”

During his time volunteering, Iglesias observed a microcosm of the world at a free lunch program. Different languages filled the air, with young children carrying homework in vibrant backpacks and elderly guests who had witnessed many decades. Some visitors engaged in lively conversations, while others bore a justified anger.

The title of the poem, Muerto de Sed, translates to “Dying of Thirst.”

This year, as violence and conflict seem insurmountable, Iglesias has grappled with feelings of helplessness. He reflects on the challenges of maintaining empathy in an era dominated by AI and social media algorithms. This introspection has led him toward community involvement as a means to counteract these overwhelming feelings.

Iglesias considers whether the fight against cruelty is best pursued through collective acts of love and service, such as sharing meals, smiles, and moments of kindness, to nourish our shared humanity.
