Richard Knoebel, Legacy Leader of Knoebels Amusement Resort, Dies at 87

The amusement park industry mourns the loss of Richard “Dick” Knoebel, an influential figure who played a pivotal role in shaping Knoebels Amusement Resort into a cherished family destination. He passed away at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and tradition.

According to FOX56, Knoebel passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. The Knoebels Amusement Resort, a family-managed attraction in Elysburg, Pennsylvania, confirmed the news of his passing.

From 1988 to 2025, Dick Knoebel served as the president of the resort, later becoming its president emeritus. His leadership was marked by substantial expansion, including iconic rides like the Phoenix and Twister, while preserving the park’s nostalgic charm. Other notable additions during his tenure include Lake Glory Campground and the Three Ponds Golf Course.

Knoebel’s impact on the park is summarized by his family’s statement, which reads: “Dick’s legacy lives on in every laugh, every ride, and every tradition that makes Knoebels feel like home. He loved this park, he loved the guests who made it special, and he loved the team who cared for it each and every day.”

Born on April 28, 1939, Dick Knoebel’s early career included a degree in engineering geophysics from Lehigh University and service as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a station in Japan. He continued his military involvement in the Marine Corps Reserve, achieving the rank of captain.

In 1968, Knoebel married Barbara Cook Knoebel, with whom he raised two sons, Rick and Brian. Barbara passed away in 2009. Beyond his contributions to the amusement park, Dick Knoebel was a prominent figure in the industry, serving in leadership roles with Pennsylvania Amusement Parks & Attractions and the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA). His achievements were recognized with an induction into the IAAPA Hall of Fame in 2014.

An active community member, Knoebel was an Eagle Scout, a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a supporter of the Masonic Children’s Village. His dedication to the park and community is remembered by his son, Brian Knoebel, who stated, “At the conclusion of each trip he took around the park, I was handed a to-do list. With his last breath, he did everything he could to make Knoebels the greatest destination on earth.”

Richard Knoebel is survived by his sons, Rick and Brian; four granddaughters; his brother, Buddy Knoebel; his sister, Leanna Muscato; and numerous extended family members.
