“Operation Ghost Wire” Nets 23 Arrests in NC Child Exploitation Sting

Child sex crime sting yields 23 arrests in the Piedmont

In a significant crackdown on child exploitation, authorities in the Piedmont region have apprehended a large group of individuals accused of sex offenses. The arrests are the result of a strategic operation aimed at curbing child sexual exploitation.

Collaborative Effort Yields Results

“Operation Ghost Wire,” a coordinated effort spearheaded by the Invictus Task Force, unfolded over a two-week period in October. The nonprofit organization teamed up with sheriff’s departments from Alamance, Randolph, Davidson, and Forsyth counties to carry out the operation. In total, 23 individuals were taken into custody, facing charges related to attempts to engage in sexual activities with minors or possession of child sexual abuse material.

Alarming Increase in Cyber Tips

During a joint press conference, Ray Dawson, the CEO and Founder of Invictus, highlighted the growing issue of child sexual abuse materials circulating online. “In 2019, our office received 5,000 cyber tips — images and videos depicting sexual abuse of a child — and that number is on the rise,” Dawson noted. “And last month in October, we had over 6,800 of those cyber tips in the state of North Carolina alone in one month.”

Community Involvement and Education

Dawson emphasized the need for a collective effort to tackle the issue, stating, “We are not going to enforce our way out of this. It’s going to take us to collaborate together with parents and people that are in a position of trust over our children because we’re going to have to educate our way out of this. This is a parenting problem.”

To address this growing concern, the Task Force plans to conduct prevention programs in Graham, aimed at educating both parents and teenagers, starting in January.
