Georgia to Issue Special Tax Refunds, Slashes Income Tax Rate

Special Tax Refund Checks Begin Issuing This Week

Georgia Taxpayers to Receive Special Refunds Starting This Week

Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp, in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Revenue, revealed that the state will commence the distribution of one-time, special tax refunds this week. This initiative marks the third instance where Georgia has opted to return a segment of its revenue surplus to its citizens, following similar actions in 2022 and 2023.

Eligibility for these refunds requires that residents have submitted both their 2023 and 2024 tax returns. The refund amounts are structured as follows: single filers may receive up to $250, heads of household could be eligible for up to $375, and married couples filing jointly might receive up to $500. The implementation of these refunds was facilitated by Governor Kemp’s signing of House Bill 112.

Governor Kemp commented on the initiative, stating, “Because we’ve managed our state’s resources wisely, we’re again able to return money to hardworking Georgians who know how best to use it.” He added that this refund, alongside the largest income tax rate cut in the state’s history, demonstrates their commitment to supporting Georgia’s residents, families, and businesses. “That’s not the government’s money, it’s theirs!” Kemp emphasized.

Furthermore, the General Assembly passed House Bill 111, which reduces Georgia’s income tax rate from 5.39% to 5.19%.
