Georgia Legislature Passes Bill to Guarantee IVF Rights for Women

Georgia Lawmakers Approve IVF Protections, Bill Heads to Governor’s Desk

Georgia Legislature Passes Bill to Protect In Vitro Fertilization Rights

In a significant move for reproductive rights, Georgia’s legislative body has passed a crucial bill ensuring that women facing fertility challenges have the legal right to pursue in vitro fertilization (IVF). On Friday, the state’s General Assembly finalized House Bill 428, with the House of Representatives unanimously agreeing to the Senate’s minor amendments to the proposal. The bill now awaits the signature of Governor Brian Kemp to become law.

The legislative action stems from a precedent-setting decision by the Alabama Supreme Court last year. The court ruled that frozen embryos created via IVF should be considered children, a decision that temporarily halted IVF procedures in Alabama. This prompted Alabama lawmakers to swiftly enact protective legislation, which was signed into law by Republican Governor Kay Ivey, to safeguard the availability of IVF in the state.
