Kid’s Summer Cafe Program Launches to Provide Free Meals for Children

In an effort to alleviate childhood hunger during the summer months, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada has launched its Kid’s Summer Cafe program at Gepford Park, offering free meals to children across Washoe County. This initiative ensures that kids from ages 2 to 18 can access nutritious lunches at several locations in Reno.

On the opening day, children eagerly queued at the park’s picnic tables to receive a wholesome meal consisting of a sandwich, an orange, carrots, and a carton of milk. The program not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also supports families by reducing their financial burdens during the summer break.

Aramelle Wheeler from the Food Bank of Northern Nevada emphasized the program’s significance, particularly as someone who experienced food insecurity in her own childhood. “They can just go about and actually enjoy their summer, as every child deserves to, without having to worry about whether or not there’s going to be food for their lunch,” Wheeler expressed.

To ensure that every meal meets health standards, the food bank collaborates closely with the Nevada Department of Agriculture and the Washoe County School District. The launch event at Gepford Park also featured a variety of activities including lawn games, face painting, and the distribution of free books, making it a festive occasion for the participating families.

This essential service will continue throughout the summer. For more details on meal times and locations, interested parties can visit fbnn.org/gethelp/kidscafe/.
