Princeton, Arizona Study Maps U.S. Groundwater Depth with Precision

Scientists create the most detailed groundwater map yet — with big implications for the West

The Ground Beneath: Unveiling America’s Most Detailed Groundwater Map

A groundbreaking research project led by Princeton University in conjunction with the University of Arizona has introduced a comprehensive groundwater map for the continental United States. This map surpasses previous versions with its precision, providing estimations of groundwater depths with remarkable specificity, even in areas as small as 100 feet across.

Traditional groundwater maps often relied on broad regional or county-level data, which lacked detail. However, by leveraging machine learning and extensive environmental datasets, the researchers have filled in gaps where direct groundwater measurements are scant or missing.

Reed Maxwell, an engineer at Princeton and co-author of the study, emphasized the importance of understanding groundwater’s proximity: “You always think the closest water is like a lake or a river or stream, but the closest water is beneath your feet.” He highlighted the educational value of this insight, particularly in the western United States, where groundwater is not as visible or considered.

In regions such as the Mountain West and Southwest, the data uncovers stark contrasts in groundwater depth over short distances. This variability is crucial in arid areas, where groundwater is a vital resource during drought conditions.

The publicly accessible map aims to assist water managers in gaining insights into local groundwater dynamics, enabling better drought planning and preventing the excessive extraction of already stressed aquifers. This need is increasingly pressing as climate change induces higher temperatures and unpredictable precipitation patterns across the western United States.
