North Carolina Schools Disable Canvas Access After Security Breach

Security breach of school software system impacts NC districts

Security Breach Temporarily Halts Canvas Access for North Carolina Schools

In the wake of a widespread security breach affecting a popular educational software, North Carolina schools are facing disruptions. The compromised system, known as Canvas, is vital for educational activities such as posting assignments and grades as well as communicating with students and staff.

The breach has raised concerns as it involves personal data such as names. However, according to the company, sensitive details like passwords, birth dates, government identifiers, and financial information have not been compromised.

The incident has affected multiple districts, including Guilford and Avery County Schools. Consequently, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has temporarily disabled Canvas access for both students and staff to safeguard their information.

In a statement, NCDPI emphasized the importance of data security, saying, “NCDPI takes the security of student and educator data seriously and will continue coordinating with partners to monitor the situation and assess any potential impact.” The department assured that further updates would be provided as new information surfaces.

Local school districts are advising their communities to refrain from interacting with emails from Canvas or attempting to access the platform until more information is gathered. Meanwhile, alternative methods for submitting and receiving assignments are being developed to ensure educational continuity.
