Innovative Scaling Strategies in the Sports Tech Industry
As companies strive to enhance their scalability, innovative tech solutions are paving the way for growth within the sports tech industry. FanWord, under the leadership of Aumueller, has embraced AI to streamline its story production, transitioning from a writing service to offering AI-powered writing tools to over 160 schools.
Similarly, SheMate, driven by Friesen’s ambition to improve scalability, is developing an app that provides users with curated content accessible at their convenience, eliminating the need for scheduled mentorship meetings.
SportsTrip, led by Rhone, has witnessed significant growth post-COVID, expanding its customer base tenfold and growing its team from three to 17 full-time employees. The company now offers comprehensive travel logistics and has ventured into the youth sports market.
“With Hudl and Opendorse, I think a lot of that’s built around … you’ve got good tech but then you’ve got a really, really good workforce,” Rhone noted, highlighting the importance of robust technology and a skilled workforce in scaling operations successfully.
Nebraska: A Hub for Sports Tech Innovation
The sports tech scene in Nebraska is benefitting from an exceptional talent pool and a supportive community, making it an attractive location for businesses. Hudl Co-founder Graff emphasized the quality of local university graduates and the state’s appealing quality of life, which aids in attracting global talent.
Aumueller, who moved from Germany to Nebraska for his studies, found inspiration in the state’s passion for the Huskers and mentorship from Opendorse co-founders, Blake Lawrence and Adi Kunalic. “When you see that in your hometown, you want to follow the lead,” Aumueller remarked, expressing a desire to carve out a unique niche in sports tech.
Friesen acknowledged the value of early connections with local sports industry leaders, although she noted the challenges of operating an all-virtual business from Omaha rather than Lincoln. She recognized Lincoln’s established culture and connections as advantageous for leadership in sports tech development.
Rhone echoed this sentiment, praising the support and talent in Lincoln. “At the end of the day, this is always going to be a Lincoln-based company for me,” Rhone affirmed, underscoring his commitment to the local community.
