Nebraska Achieves Historic Ranking in AP Top 25

In a landmark moment for Nebraska, the Cornhuskers have ascended to the fifth position in the Associated Press Top 25, marking their highest ranking ever and a first for the state.

This achievement establishes the Huskers as the leading Division I team in Nebraska’s history. Previously, the highest ranking for a Nebraska-based team was Creighton’s No. 7, achieved multiple times over the past decade. For more details on Creighton’s rankings, visit here.

During a press briefing on Monday, Nebraska’s head coach Fred Hoiberg emphasized the importance of maintaining focus amid the excitement of their upcoming challenging game against Michigan on Tuesday.

“It’s a great accomplishment, but it doesn’t mean anything until the end of the year,” Hoiberg stated. “We’re just fighting to keep this thing going, keep it moving in the right direction. And the only thing that matters is what goes on at the end of the year.”

Facing the formidable Michigan Wolverines, who boast an 18-1 record and a No. 3 ranking, presents a significant challenge. Hoiberg likened the Wolverines to an NBA team due to their impressive size and speed.

“They’re just a machine. (Head coach) Dusty (May) has done an unbelievable job with this group,” Hoiberg remarked. “We got to be smart. They’re one of the best shot blocking teams in the country. They’re a great steal team. We have to take care of it — that’s where it starts — take care of the ball, get back in transition, and find a way to compete on the glass against a team that is elite in that area as well.”

Hoiberg also acknowledged the significance of the matchup, stating, “It’s a great opportunity, yes, and we got to go in there and give everything we got to have a chance.”

As Nebraska prepares to meet Michigan on the court, the game will represent the Huskers’ first-ever top five encounter in school history. The game is set to tip off at 6 p.m. CT and will be available for viewing on Peacock.
