Innovative Traffic Safety Facility Launches in Greensboro
In a bid to enhance traffic safety, North Carolina A&T State University has introduced an innovative testing site in Greensboro. Known as the Smart Intersection Test Facility, this project is a joint effort involving A&T, the city of Greensboro, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Positioned at the intersection of East Market and Dudley streets, the facility serves as a dynamic testing ground where researchers and students can evaluate new transportation technologies, including self-driving vehicles, in authentic urban conditions. This outdoor laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge sensors such as radar and LiDAR, the latter of which utilizes laser technology to calculate distances and produce detailed 3D models of the area.
Bijoy Bhowmik, a PhD student at A&T, emphasized the importance of integrating multiple technologies: “If you have only cameras, the cameras have some drawbacks, like on the sunlight, it cannot see as humans can see, right?” said Bhowmik. “So this problem can be solved with the other sensors.”

This facility not only augments research opportunities for A&T students in fields like smart mobility, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence but also offers practical benefits for the Greensboro community. These include improved traffic flow analysis, more accurate crash risk modeling, and enhanced monitoring of pedestrian safety.
