State Senate Modifies Fiscal Year 2026 Budget Proposal

The Georgia State Senate has introduced changes to the proposed fiscal year 2026 budget, notably curtailing some of Governor Brian Kemp’s financial plans for state employees and social initiatives. These adjustments, while retaining certain taxpayer benefits, reduce the scope of several key funding proposals.

Governor Kemp initially proposed a $2,000 one-time salary enhancement for state employees and educators. However, the Senate has adjusted this proposal, cutting the amount to $1,250. Despite this reduction, the Senate preserved the intended tax refunds of $250 for individual taxpayers and $500 for married couples.

Additionally, the Senate has made significant cuts to other funding allocations. The DREAMS scholarship endowment, which was slated to receive $325 million to support low-income students attending college, has been reduced by $200 million. Similarly, a $40 million cut was applied to the $50 million budget earmarked by Kemp to combat homelessness.

These amendments mean that the House and Senate will need to negotiate to reconcile differences between their respective budget versions before the legislation can be presented to Governor Kemp for approval.
