Don Martin Steps Back from Forsyth County Leadership Role

In a significant development for Forsyth County governance, Don Martin, the Chair of the Board of Commissioners, has announced he will not pursue re-election in the upcoming cycle. This declaration coincides with the opening of the candidate filing period.

Martin’s decision marks the culmination of over ten years on the commission, following an extensive 19-year tenure with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education. Approaching his 75th birthday, Martin cites the need for change as a primary reason for his departure, stating, “I think that’s the biggest reason it’s time to step back. I think it’s easy to serve too long.”

Throughout his service, Martin has been instrumental in several initiatives, notably advocating for a sales tax referendum to enhance teacher salaries, spearheading economic development, and steering the county’s response during the COVID-19 crisis. Although he will not seek re-election, Martin’s current term extends until December 2026.
