Fishers of Men: Bringing Health Care to Rural Georgia Communities

Fishers of Men engages community to increase access to health services and education

A New Approach to Health Care in Rural Georgia: The Fishers of Men Initiative

In rural Georgia, a groundbreaking approach is transforming the accessibility of health care for underserved communities. The initiative, led by Dr. Henry Young, Kroger Professor of Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy at the University of Georgia’s College of Pharmacy, aims to bridge long-standing gaps in health services.

Named Fishers of Men, this program builds on the foundation of trust and partnership, focusing on delivering health care directly to the communities in need. By collaborating with local churches, the initiative establishes neighborhood health hubs that provide telehealth services, preventive care, and education for managing chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Dr. Young discussed the initiative’s objectives and impacts in a conversation with James Hataway from WUGA. The Fishers of Men program seeks to dismantle barriers to health care by situating services in environments that residents already trust and frequent.
