Unveiling the Secrets of Georgia’s Ancient Mounds
In the heart of Georgia lies a pair of enigmatic stone structures that have long puzzled archaeologists and historians alike. Known as the Rock Hawk and Rock Eagle mounds, these formations have attracted countless visitors and sparked numerous investigations into their origins and significance.
A team of researchers from the University of Georgia, calling themselves The Alliance, is delving deep into the mysteries surrounding these prehistoric Native American sites. This interdisciplinary group brings together experts from a range of fields, including geological sciences and the humanities, to unravel the history and purpose of these ancient mounds.
The Alliance features Ervan Garrison, a Professor Emeritus of Archaeological Geology and Geophysics, Sergio Bernardes, the Associate Director of UGA’s Center for Geospatial Research, Dr. Jim Wilson, an English Department instructor, and Abhijit Sarmah, a PhD candidate in English. These scholars recently shared their insights and discoveries in an interview with Emma Auer from WUGA.
For those interested in learning more about their ongoing research, The Alliance will be presenting their findings on the Rock Hawk and Rock Eagle mounds at an event scheduled for February 24th. This presentation will be held at Park Hall on the UGA campus from 4-5 pm.
